Several Cherokee County residents remained without power Tuesday morning, March 19, after storms rolled through the area bringing lightning, heavy winds and hail Monday afternoon, March 18. While trees and power poles were snapped throughout the county, fortunately no injuries were reported.

Reports indicated that downed trees and power lines and damaged a number of homes in the area.

Crews are out and will be working for the next several hours to clear the roads and get the power back on.

Several trees were down and barns were damaged on County Road 1 between Sand Rock and Collinsville.

Damage was also reported along County Road 273 with trees down along most of the roads in that area. Trees were also down on County Road 70, reports said.

Weather officials believe most of the local damage was caused by straight-line winds which reached speeds of up to 70 miles per hour.

Dekalb County was under a tornado warning Monday afternoon, although Cherokee County was never under a tornado warning.

Around 4 p.m. Monday, Cherokee County was placed under a severe thunderstorm warning.

Gadsden State Community College issued alerts that all Monday evening classes were cancelled at all campuses, including the Cherokee campus,

Classes resumed as normal for Cherokee County Schools Tuesday morning, although some storm damage was reported on the Sand Rock School campus.

Other areas receiving damage included Tates Chapel, Bay Springs, Gaylesville, Little River, Howell’s Crossroads, Newton’s Crossroads, the Unity Community, Tabor Road and others.
