WOODVILLE – Losing quarterback Robert Gray to an injury did not seem to bother the Collinsville Panthers Friday night.

Instead, the Panthers turned to their defense and freshman Trey Reed, who alternated at quarterback with Nathan Coker, for a 32-8 Class 1A, Region 6 win over Woodville.

The win was the first of the season for the Panthers, who improve to 1-3 and 1-2 in region play.

“We gave good effort. We hustled on defense,” Collinsville coach Alan Beckett said. “Kenny Orr did a good job of disrupting them. We did a good job on [Kyle] Holt. We keyed on him.”

Holt entered the game as Jackson County’s leading rusher but managed only 58 yards on 31 carries against a stubborn Collinsville defense.

Trailing 8-7 with 7 minutes to go in the second quarter, Collinsville watched Woodville (0-4, 0-3) mount a 17-play 70-yard drive that the Panthers snuffed out at their own 3-yard line as time ran out.

Then, the Panther offense went to work in the third quarter.

Jonathan Cole, who opened the scoring with an 18-yard touchdown run with 9:23 to go in the first quarter, scored with 8:11 to play in the third. That put Collinsville in front 13-8.

Less than two minutes later, Cole scored again on a 13-yard run.

In the fourth quarter, Cole scored his fourth touchdown of the night on a 21-yard run. Coker put the game out of reach with a 35-yard touchdown run.

Cole rushed for 111 yards on 17 carries to lead Collinsville.

Beckett is hoping the win will spark the Panthers the rest of the season.

“I think we can compete in the second-half of the season,” Beckett said. “This was a hard-fought game, and I really believe we have some wins coming in the second-half of the season.”

Collinsville travels to Fayetteville next Friday night.
