With area tournaments beginning next week, softball teams around the state are making one last push to position themselves for the playoffs. Two such teams are the Cherokee County Lady Warriors and the Spring Garden Lady Panthers.

Both teams moved up in their respective classes in the final Alabama Sportswriters Association softball poll of the season.

Cherokee County (26-5-1) has won 10 games in a row, including the Nike Gulf Coast Classic in Gulf Shores over spring break. The Lady Warriors moved up two places from last week’s poll and now sit at No. 5 in the Class 4A rankings. Cherokee County is set to host Gaston on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. and will play in the Cullman Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

In Class 1A, Spring Garden moved up a notch to No. 9 in this week’s poll. The Lady Panthers (15-5) are coming off a 2-0 win over Gaston on Wednesday, a game in which sophomore pitcher Bree Blevins set the new school record for strikeouts. Blevins now has 502 strikeouts for her career. The old mark was 491, set by Jessica Barnes in 2007.

Spring Garden has won eight consecutive games and is scheduled to play at Asbury on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Collinsville (15-9) dropped a notch to No. 10 this week and is scheduled to host Jacksonville Christian on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
