The Cherokee County Hall of Fame has announced three new members to its ranks. Former Cherokee County and University of Alabama football standout John Miller, former Cherokee County and University of Auburn offensive guard Brad Johnson and former Gaylesville football and basketball standout Bob Wheeling make up the Class of 2009.

Miller was a member of the 1926 undefeated Warrior football team. He went on to play at Alabama where he was a three-year starter and a member of the 1930 National Championship team.

Johnson was an all-state performer and a highly-touted recruit in the mid-1980s for the Warriors. He took his talent to Auburn, where he was a member of three SEC Championship teams (1987-89).

Wheeling was a four-year starting quarterback for Gaylesville in the late 1950s. He led the Trojans to an undefeated season in 1958. Wheeling was also a three-year starter at point guard on the basketball team in which he led the Trojans to a county championship in 1959.

The trio will be formally honored on July 18 at the Gadsden State-Cherokee banquet room. Tickets are $20.

Speaking of Sand Rock, the Lady Wildcat basketball team held their ninth annual basketball camp June 1-2 in the Sand Rock gym.

Current Lady Wildcat players and coaches instructed campers in fundamentals while trying to keep basketball fun for everyone. Campers competed in team games, individual competitions and participated in station drill work.

The team wishes to thank Yvonne Jacoway, Tina Rowland and Nancy McMahan for help with food preparation and Owen’s Sporting Goods for sponsoring the camp.

The Cedar Bluff Tiger football team held its 12th annual Future Tiger Football Camp June 1-2 at Bruce Field.

The camp, sponsored by J&M Hardware and Dixie Piledrivers, is a showcase of kids’ football skills from kindergarten through fifth grade. They participate in drills conducted by the Tiger coaching staff and several varsity football players.

Cedar Bluff head coach Jonathan McWhorter said the camp also serves as a chance for the younger players to bond with their peers and coaches.

“It’s more of an interaction between us and them,” he said. “It’s about developing that relationship where they know who the coaches are and we know who they are. It’s just something special in a small school setting.”

McWhorter said numbers were up a little for this year’s camp. A total of 32 kids signed up to participate.

At the end of Tuesday’s activities, prizes were given to contest winners. Robert Abernathy earned the punt, pass and kick award in the Red group (kindergarten and first grade). The overall camper in the Red group was Marcus McKinney.

Ross Johnson earned the punt, pass and kick award in the White group (second and third grade). Greyson Wilson was chosen as the White group overall camper.

Jordan McElroy earned the punt, pass and kick award in the Blue group (fourth and fifth grade). D.J. Chapman was selected as the Blue group overall camper.

In last week’s edition of The Herald, a story on Cherokee County softball player Rachel Hale said she had signed a scholarship with the Jacksonville State Gamecocks.

Hale has not signed a scholarship, but has been invited to the team as a walk-on player.

Hale helped lead the Lady Warriors to a 33-9-1 record and a berth in the Class 4A North Central Regionals this season. She batted .308 with 32 hits in 104 at-bats. Hale also had 20 walks, scored 20 runs and had 20 RBIs.

The camp will be held August 3-4 and 6-7 at the Centre Tennis Courts from 5-7 p.m. The camp is open for kids ages 5-13 and the cost is $30.

The camp teaches the basics of tennis, with drills, games and daily prizes. Tennis balls will be provided, but camp officials request participants bring their own rackets.
