The 19th annual Sand Rock Wildcat Youth Football Camp was held June 1-2 with a record 62 future Wildcat football players attending. Athletes from grades 4-8 endured two days in extreme heat being introduced to drills and football schemes in the camp, hosted by the Wildcat football coaching staff. There was also a punt, pass and kick competition as well as a 40-yard dash championship.
Fourth grade competition winners were Carson Caver (punting and 40-yard dash) and Brett Jackson (passing and kicking). Fifth grade winners were Perry Stephans (punting and 40-yard dash), Josh Sarrett (passing) and Caleb Ransum (kicking).Sixth grade winners were Jay Dutton (punting and kicking), Dakoda Mackey (passing) and Jonathan Heard (40-yard dash). Seventh grade winners were Dustin Chambers (passing, kicking and 40-yard dash) and Austin Chambers (punting). Eighth grade winners were Dylan Mackey (punting, passing and kicking) and Derrick Stone (40-yard dash).

The Sand Rock football team wasn’t the only one holding a camp recently. The Wildcat boys basketball team also held their annual camp earlier this month. The camp, conducted by the Wildcat boys basketball staff, had 38 participants..

The Alabama Warriors, a 13-and-under basketball team, recently won the Georgia Summer Slam Championship. The Warriors (25-4) are ranked No. 1 in Alabama and have lost only one game to teams playing with 13-year-olds only.

Dixie Youth Shirt and Cap District 8 Baseball of Centre will host a tournament beginning on Friday and continuing through July 3. Fourteen teams from Jackson, DeKalb, Etowah and Cherokee counties will compete.

The Rome Braves will host their seventh annual baseball camp June 29-July 1 at State Mutual Stadium. The camp is for children 7-12 and is led by Rome Braves Manager Randy Ingle, coaches Jim Czajkowksi and Bobby Moore and members of the 2009 Rome Braves team.
Camp begins at 9a.m. each morning and ends at 1p.m. after lunch is served. The cost is $150 per child and includes lunch, a t-shirt and a ticket to each night’s game over the duration of the camp. Campers are recognized on the field preceding the game on July 1.

For the fifth consecutive year, the Gadsden State Cardinal softball team was named an Academic All-American Team with a cumulative grade point average of 3.12. Several team members also received individual athletic and academic honors.
Former Sand Rock standout Taylor Burt was named to the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association All-South Region team. This is the first time that a Gadsden State player has achieved this honor.
Shana Wheeler of Scottsboro was named Distinguished Academic All-American with a 4.0 GPA.
Several team members were named to the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) All-Region and All-League Teams according to Athletic Director Mike Cancilla. The team qualified for the 2009 Fast Pitch Softball State Tournament held in Alabaster this year, but was eliminated in the third round.
Players named to the All-Region Team are Taylor Burt (First Team); Lauren Wilborn of Henegar, and Ashly Carroll of Rainsville (Second Team).
Players named to the All-League North First Team are Burt, Wilborn, Carroll and Emily Vest of Attalla. Second Team members are Wheeler, Megan Adams, Boaz; Kandace Christopher, Attalla and Heather Odom, Oneonta.
“We are very proud of these young ladies for their accomplishments on and off the field,” head coach Jeanne Kerr said. “They are a very special group and very deserving of these honors as they have worked as hard as any group we’ve had at Gadsden State. They have set the standard for future teams of improving the program each year and on every level.”
