Cedar Bluff’s Kyle Crane and Sand Rock’s Shane Wells came up big last Friday night when their respective teams needed them the most.
In a 27-21 win over Collinsville, Crane completed 12-of-23 passes for 166 yards and four touchdowns, including the 23-yard game-winner to Anthony Taylor with 2:12 left in the game.
His other touchdown throws came from 28, 14 and 9 yards.
Those numbers earned the junior quarterback recognition from the Alabama Sportswriters Association in its weekly Players of the Week nominations.
While Crane was busy on the offensive side, Wells was making his mark on both sides of the ball against Ider. On defense the senior posted 11 tackles, while on offense he was one of quarterback Justin Mackey’s top targets. Wells had four catches for 40 yards and a touchdown in a 21-7 win over the Hornets.
Those numbers were also noted by the ASWA, as Wells made the weekly honor list.
In the top statewide honors, Davidson quarterback Jarrell Smith rushed for a career-high 235 yards on 23 carries with three touchdowns – 70, 45 and 7 yards – and was 5-of-6 passing for 106 yards and a pair of touchdowns to beat Theodore 41-39 for the first time since 2005.
Smith edged out two other fine performances in Daphne’s Robert Cooper and Minor’s Dezman Ivory. Cooper was 16-of-25 passing for 250 yards and rushed for 125 more on 26 carries with both touchdowns in the Trojans’ 14-9 win over Foley. Ivory had 127 yards rushing with a 54-yard touchdown, caught five passes for 109 yards and a 62-yard touchdown and a 61-yard punt return for a touchdown in the Tigers’ 38-14 win over Jackson-Olin.
On defense/special teams, Barbour County’s Calvin Fenn earned ASWA player of the week honors for his effort in the Jaguars’ 16-14 comeback win over G.W. Long. Fenn had 15 tackles on defense and an interception that set up the second of his two touchdowns on offense. But he forced the opposing quarterback into an intentional grounding call in the end zone that resulted in a safety and a win for the Jaguars.
Pike County’s Tevin Andrews and Boaz kicker Roby Spruiell were also finalists. Andrews intercepted two passes, had four tackles and returned a fumble 88 yards for the winning touchdown in the Bulldogs’ 25-19 win over Abbeville. Spruiell kicked a 26-yard field goal with five seconds left to lift the Pirates to a 17-14 victory over ninth-ranked and unbeaten Fort Payne.
Some 57 players were nominated in this week’s list from ASWA members in Birmingham, Centre, Dothan, Florence, Fort Payne, Grove Hill, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, and Oneonta, while the top players were chosen by an ASWA panel.
