The win put Collinsville (3-4, 2-3) in a three-way tie for fourth place in the region, with Gaylesville (3-4, 2-3) and Valley Head. The Panthers face Valley Head in Week 9 in a game that will likely decide the last playoff spot in the region.
“I’m only ready to think about Skyline,” said Collinsville coach Alan Beckett. “That’s the next one, so that’s the big one for us now.”
Gaylesville jumped out to a 6-0 lead with 1:09 left in the first on a 1-yard touchdown run by Cain Higgins.
On Collinsville’s next possession, quarterback Robert Gray found Tyler Tidmore on a 15-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 6-6 with 11:53 left in the second.
Gray then found Jonathon Cole on a 45-yard touchdown pass to give the Panthers a 12-6 lead going into the half.
Gaylesville lineman Caleb Leach returned a fumble 60 yards to give the Trojans a 14-12 lead with 11:53 left in the third.
Collinsville then took the lead for good on a 6-yard touchdown run by Cole.
On Gaylesville’s next possession, Gray picked up a Trojan fumble and returned it 18 yards to extend Collinsville’s lead to 28-14 with 49 seconds left in the third.
Cole added a 60-yard touchdown run with 7:12 left to put the Panthers up 35-14.
Gaylesville added a 7-yard touchdown pass from Luke Murphy to Nick Reed as time expired.
Cole finished the night with 15 carries for 138 yards, two catches for 46 yards, two touchdowns and one interception on defense. Gray had 107 yards on 11 carries and was 3-of-8 passing for 61 yards.
