Three suspects are now in custody, one being charged with attempted murder following a burglary and nearly hour-long high speed chase throughout the eastern portion of Cherokee County last week. Lawmen from 12 agencies braved frigid temperatures while searching for two men in a wooded area near the Alabama state line Tuesday evening. According to one report, they may not have been Smokey and the Bandit, but came "might close" during a four-hour manhunt near the state line. Agents acted on tips from local residents in making these arrests. The ordeal, reports said, began around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, when authorities answered a theft in progress call at a residence approximately 12 miles east of Centre. Kelly was apprehended on site, however, Beal and Davis escaped with several items. Those arrested, according to reports, included Kim Kelly, 33, of Piedmont, who was charged with theft of property in the first degree; Stanley Beal, 31, of Centre, who was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, theft of property in the first degree and aggravated assault on a police officer and Bobby Ray Davis, 26, of Piedmont, who was charged with theft of property in the first degree
