A local Red Cross volunteer has received a state award for dedicated service to her chapter.

During the recent Annual Alabama Red Cross Convention held in Gulf Shores, Teresa Burkhart was presented with the Blood Services Volunteer Award. Mrs. Burkhart is a Blood Services volunteer who works out of the Cherokee County office in Centre. She is a retired educator and has been volunteering for six years in many areas. For the past year and a half, Mrs. Burkhart has worked closely with the local blood drives attending to each detail.

She advertises the drives in the media, puts out posters, sets up the facilities, secures volunteers for registration and canteen, and attends each drive to assure its success," said Retired Major General James "Buddy" Moore who presented the award to Mrs. Burkhart. "Her hard work and dedication has paid off in a 119 percent increase in number of donors presented the first quarter of 2000-2001 and a 123 percent increase in productive units received. The second quarter shows an improvement of 205 percent in donors and 206 percent in productive units.
