"It was exciting," Davis said. "It just looks easier when you're sitting in the audience, but I think it went real well and I'm looking forward to the next one.
Chairman Tommy McDaniel called the 6 p.m. meeting to order and Board Member Don Stowe opened with prayer. McDaniel noted that the meeting was very special in a number of ways.
"We have our new superintendent Kay King Davis, who is the first elected female to that position and we're glad to have Kay with us today," McDaniel began. "Tonight also marks another milestone. It's been over 20 years since there have been Board members who have served under three different superintendents. Jackie (Howell) and I have served under three different superintendents so it's been 28 years. Also, Kay served as a Board member under Mr. Arnold when he was superintendent so there are a lot of different twists and variations and we are very glad to have everyone here tonight."
McDaniel then gave the floor to the very excited Davis who addressed the meeting crowd for the first time as superintendent.
"This has been a very exciting day," she began. " This morning when I got up I thought, 'Well, what am I going to do today? I'll probably just have to sit there.' But I have not sat down all day. It has been very exciting with all the people coming by and all the things that I have been to like bid openings and I'm just excited to be here tonight."
McDaniel then took a moment to mention Davis' mother, Mrs. Edith King, who made many great contributions to the county, and the fact that the Board is looking for many great things with Davis at the helm.
The Board meeting officially began with the approval of minutes and adoption of the agenda. Davis noted that she will be adding a Superintendent's Report at each meeting, which will recognize a certain teacher, student or concern.
The Gaylesville Booster Club was present with concerns over the engineering study being performed on the school grounds. Due to septic tank problems, the Gaylesville bleachers have been damaged. The Board agreed that it was their responsibility to pay for the studies that have to be done and then the school will pick up payment for the actual building of new bleachers.
