Leesburg Day was a hit in its thirteenth year. The crowd was one of the largest seen at the community festival. The mayor, the clerk and all the council members are very pleased with the success of the annual event.

Festivities began with the crowning of Mrs. Leesburg (usually the oldest resident). Mrs. Arlene Milling was chosen as this year’s honoree. Milling is a native of DeKalb County. She married Tommie Milling in 1938 and they had two daughters. Tommie passed away in 1983. Mrs. Arlene has five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. She has been a member of the Eastern Star and belongs to Ruhama Church.

Mrs. Milling thanked the town saying it is an honor to be Mrs. Leesburg. She was crowed by Frances Longshore.

After the crowning, the day was officially kicked off by Rep. Richard Lindsey (D-39).

“It is always good to be in Leesburg,” said Lindsey. “Everyone here is a pleasure to work with. These are the kind of folks that everyone enjoys working with and that’s how you get projects done.

“It’s a good day and a good time to celebrate. It’s not the case worldwide where you can get together and celebrate your community.”

The grounds around the Leesburg Pavilion were covered in displays with everything from fig trees to candles, jewelry and Beanie Babies. Several organizations were present including Rehab Partners, the Cherokee Humane Society, Cherokee BMC, the National Wild Turkey Federation and KTH Leeburg Products.

Bluegrass resounded from underneath the pavilion throughout the day from the Fletcher Brothers and the Bailey Boys. Councilwoman Diane Tillery passed out over $2,500 in doorprizes and the BBQ was such a hit, the mayor had to help make extra sandwiches.

“We had a real good crowd,” said Tillery. “I’ve was very impressed with the amount of people of all ages. The kids seemed to have a real good time. We really appreciate everybody coming out and supporting this event. It’s growing every year.
