Centre City Council authorized Mayor Phil Powell at its regular meeting last Tuesday (April 23) to borrow $150,000 from Regions Bank for the purchase of a new fire truck.

The loan will be over a 10-year fixed period with an interest rate of 4.85%, with a five-year balloon payment. The city is expected to get the fire truck in the next few months.

Rezoning of a tract of land owned by Joe McElroy along Highway 411 South from residential to Highway Commer-cial was approved following a public hearing. Council also passed an ordinance to convey tract 12 in the industrial park to allow for the upcoming expansion of East Alabama Truss Company.

Council discussed a request by the State of Alabama to locate its unemployment office in the building currently occupied by the Chamber of Commerce, which will be relocated to the city property on Cedar Bluff Road. In other action, Mayor Phil Powell announced he had been ap-proached by the State of Alabama.

“We need to tell them they may need to look further,” Mayor Powell advised after some discussion. Concern was voiced as to whether the state wanted to rent the building or use it free of charge. Thoughts run toward using the building as a senior citizens center.

The YMCA’s contract for the use of the city swimming pool during the summer was discussed. The city is asking the YMCA to name the city on its insurance policy. “No matter who’s running the swimming pool, we’re responsible,” Councilman Joe Hall said. Recreation Director Charles Glasner will continue work on the contract.

Councilwoman Bess Yar-brough said she attended the grand opening of the Jackson-ville Community Center. “It’s nice,” she said. “We need something like that. We need to start working on getting it going. We need it really bad.

Asked the approximate price of the Jacksonville facility, Glasner said about $4 million,“It’s larger than we would need,” Mayor Powell said
