At stake will be the office of Cherokee County Sheriff.
Chief Deputy Larry Wilson and Leesburg Police Chief Terrell Ransum survived the Democratic Primary two weeks ago, and the winner of next Tuesday’s vote will replace retiring Sheriff Roy Wynn at the conclusion of his third term.
The polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
In the Primary two weeks ago, 2,545 of the 5,471 votes cast — 46.5 percent — were cast for Wilson. Ransum had 1,799 votes, 32.9 percent, and District Attorney investigator Danny Smith drew 1,127 votes, 20.6 percent. Since no candidate polled the required majority of the votes cast, the runoff was necessary.
Tuesday’s winner faces no opposition in the General Election; there were no Republican candidates on the county ballot.
Democrats and Republicans alike face statewide.
State Auditor Susan Parker and Montgomery attorney Julian McPhillips are in the runoff for the Democratic nomination to see who will face Republican U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions in the General Election. Sen. Sessions had no Republican challenger in the Primary.
Democrats and Republicans alike will be casting runoff ballots for state treasurer. Assistant Attorney General Carol Jean Smith and Birmingham attorney Stephen Black are the Democrats in the runoff for state treasurer; Republican runoff hopefuls in that race are Kay Ivey and former First Lady Lisa Wallace
