On Thursday evening, July 11, the body of Wanda Raney, 40, was discovered in the Tennalla Community, about three miles south of Centre off County Road 169.
The investigation, conducted by Piedmont and Cherokee County authorities, led to the arrest of the suspect, Lisa Renee Beal, 29, of Piedmont who was taken into custody Thursday, and charged with robbery in the first degree and murder. More arrests are possible, said Cherokee County Chief Investigator Larry Wilson.
The body was discovered Thursday, July 11, between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., according to reports. Cherokee County Coroner Don Rogers identified the victim.
“We received a report that someone had discovered a body off 169,” said Cherokee County Chief Investigator Larry Wilson. “We responded to the call and found the body of a white female who had been beaten and stabbed.”
Just after 1 p.m. that day, reports say, the suspect’s vehicle was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run accident near Mountain Springs Church in the Southern portion of Cherokee County. Authorities believe that incident occurred prior to the murder.
According to Wilson, robbery appeared to be the motive for the murder and the investigation indicates that the victim knew her alleged attacker. Raney’s body was dumped on a field road and discovered by three fishermen walking to Terrapin Creek, according to the sheriff’s report.
Cherokee County and Piedmont authorities are continuing the investigation, Wilson said.
Beal is currently lodged in the Cherokee County Detention Center on $280,000 bond, reports said
