At the Jan. 6 Leesburg Town Council meeting, Mayor Ed Mackey confirmed that Olympia Construction, Inc. of Albertville has been given the go-ahead for the first 24 units and a community center, and that groundbreaking is expected within the next few month.
“As I mentioned a few months ago when [Olympia Development Manager] Butch Richardson was here showing us the layout, these apartments are intended for working people,” said Mackey. “As I understand the company’s policy, if applicants don’t work, they won’t be approved for a unit. This won’t be subsidized housing; it’s for working-class families.”
Richardson noted that the preliminary work such as surveying and environmental studies is already in progress.
“The actual construction should get going in early April after the weather clears. At this point, the building time frame should be in the area of six to seven months.
“We’re real excited to getting things underway and working in the Leesburg area. Cherokee County has a lot of good things going on right now in terms of industry, and we’re glad to be a part of it.
In other business, the council approved a motion to rent to KTH-Leesburg a town-owned building at a cost of $2,500 per month from January through November.
The council also agreed to pay the expenses of Mackey and councilman Kevin Ford on their trip to the 2003 National League of Cities Congressional Conference in Washington, D.C. from May 7-11.
“Going up there last year helped us get federal grants,” pointed out Mackey. “If the town get any grants for this year, it’s going to come from the federal government rather than the state. I think it’s very important that we attend the conference this year and see what funds we can bring back.”
The council voted to hire a computer consultant for the purpose of updating the town web page, as well as agreeing to purchase a full-page advertisement in the Cherokee County Herald’s upcoming 2003 Progress special edition
