The Town of Cedar Bluff once again will try to get a municipal election that would allow its residents of voting age to determine whether or not alcoholic beverages can be sold within the corporation limits.

State Sen. Larry Means (D-Attala), who represents the district, is sponsor of the act which will come before the state senate during its regular session which begins next month.

“Personally, I am against the thing,” Sen. Means said. “I don’t think it satisfies the problems like people think it will. But I let the local governmental bodies make the decision. If they pass a resolution unanimously asking me to introduce a bill, I will bring it before the legislature.

“I have a hard time not letting the people vote. If they vote it in or vote it out, it will be their decision.”

If the bill were enacted, the Town of Cedar Bluff would hold a municipal election later this year. The referendum would ask voters to vote “Yes” or “No” on alcohol sales and distribution in the Town of Cedar Bluff.

Last April, a similar bill was introduced in the state legislature, but it was determined at that time that it would be unconstitutional for the Town of Cedar Bluff to hold such an election. The state constitution says that only municipalities of 7,000 or more may hold such a referendum.

Cedar Bluff Mayor Bob Davis said he had been advised by town attorney Dean Buttram Jr. not to comment on the issue at this time.
