The Leesburg Police Dept. soon won’t have to travel very far to hone their respective marksmanship skills.

At its Apr. 7 meeting, the Leesburg Town Council voted to enter a contract with the Cedar Bluff Police Dept. and donate $500 towards the completion of a county law en-forcement firing range.

Cedar Bluff Police Dept. Chief Steve Walden noted that county officers had individually contributed approximately $9,000, and that a tower would complete said project. Walden pointed out that the range provides certification training and that the Leesburg Police Dept. may use the facility at its members’ convenience.

In other business, the council approved a motion to have a pier built at the town park and boat dock for the purpose of hosting a May fishing tournament, with said motion contingent on a bid estimate no more than $6,000.

Upon the request of Leesburg Homemakers Club representative Carol Ann, the council agreed to renew an annual $500 contract that allows the American Cancer Society to provide a cancer awareness booth at the 2003 Leesburg Day.

The council also approved a motion for Document Imaging, Inc., to perform computer work for the town.

Mayor Ed Mackey announced that the volunteer fire department is looking to be added into the municipality, and that more information on the matter would be available at the council’s May 5 meeting.

Mackey also reported that he, Town Clerk Jennifer Sharpe and council members Kevin Ford, Elbert St. Clair, Wayne Byrum and Dianne Tillery would attend the 2003 State Municipality Convention later this month in Huntsville.

Before adjournment, Mackey expressed thanks to police department members Terrell Ransum, Lanny Ransum and Jeff Morgan for their outstanding work on a recent criminal investigation
