The Cherokee County Board of Education has voted to cancel the contract of a tenured employee within the school system.

The board took this action in a recent meeting following a brief executive session with Board Attorney Kenneth Wilson. Neither Wilson nor the board could comment further on the action at this time.

In other personnel action, the board:

*approved retirements/resignations of Gail Davis, Marilyn Hawkins as Cedar Bluff bus driver effective immediately, Erin Seagraves as Centre Elementary School teacher, effective May 23, 2003 and Nathan Wehunt as In School Suspension (ISS) Aide at Gaylesville, effective May 23, 2003.

*approved leaves of absences for Julie Graves, one year educational leave of absence as teacher at Centre Middle School for the 2003-04 school year and Jennifer Sawyer, maternity leave under the Family Medical Leave Act for the 2003-04 school year.

*approved the resignations of Brent Mobbs as jr. high baseball coach at Gaylesville School for the 2002-03 school year, Shane Dodd as jr. high baseball coach at Gaylesville School for the 2002-2003 school year and Stan Jones as head football coach/athletic director at Spring Garden School effective at the end of the 2002-03 school year.

*approved James Blanchard as junior high baseball coach at Gaylesville School for the 2002-2003 school year with a supplement of $593.

*approved posting a physical education teacher position at Centre Elementary School for the 2003-04 school year.

*approved support personnel non-renewals as presented.

The board also met in executive session for two disciplinary hearings and following the hearings, voted to suspend one of the students through May 19. The student will be allowed to return for semester tests. The board voted to suspend the other student until May 12. The student will receive homebound services three days per week, said Kay Davis, superintendent, Cherokee County Schools.

*approved out-of-state travel for Sony Tibbs and Scott Hays to Tunica, MS for a football coaching clinic.

*approved additional career/technical education and computer applications textbooks to be added to the system’s list of textbooks.

*approved dual enrollment for math at Cherokee County High School beginning with the 2003-04 school year.

*adopted the Notification of Rights under the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA) as presented.

*approved repair or replacement of softball fence at Spring Garden School at no cost to the board.

The next meeting of the board is scheduled for May 13, at 6 p.m., at the board office
