A Fort Payne youth drowned at Little River Canyon Mouth Park this past Fourth of July Weekend.

According to witness reports, Jay Jack Whitt, 15, was swimming with friends when he went under water and never resurfaced. Cherokee County Rescue Squad arrived around 2 p.m. Sunday Approximately two hours later, they found Whitt’s body lodged under a rock in approximately 11 feet of water.

Whitt was transported to Cherokee Baptist Medical Center, where Cherokee County Coroner Don Rogers pronounced him dead upon arrival, reports say
