Kay Davis and the Cherokee County Board of Education are planning strategy to better inform the public and help sell Gov. Bob Riley's tax plan before the Sept. 9 election.

Mrs. Davis gave an update during a recent board of education meeting.

“Everybody has been reading in the paper about Gov. Riley's plan," said Mrs. Davis. “On July 15, we will be meeting in Gulf Shores with Dr. Ed Richardson(state school superintendent.) He will be giving all superintendents our PowerPoint presentations and we will be coming back and flooding the community with information. Also, today I receive a call from Dr. Lori Owens with Jacksonville State University. She has offered to help in any form to get the word out. Freddy Reynolds is going to be our county coordinator. I feel like we are heading in the right direction.”

The board approved nominations of Keith Day, Jackie Howell and Billy Wilson to the Cherokee County Board of Equalization. Only one nominee from each entity, including one from the board of education, one from the Cherokee County Commission and another from the city of Centre, the county seat and largest city, will ultimately be chosen to serve on this board.

The board also approved principal contracts for Centre Elementary School Principal Dewayne Pierce, Sand Rock School Principal Brian Johnson and Cherokee County High School Principal Paul Hyche.

In other personnel action, the board:

-approved the retirement of Kathy Hampton as a teacher at Cedar Bluff School and gave Superintendent Davis permission to post the position.

-approved the transfers of Lorie Howell from counselor at Gaylesville School to counselor at Cherokee County High School and gave the superintendent to post the position; Sabrina Jones from third grade teacher at Centre Elementary School to second grade teacher at Sand Rock School and gave the superintendent to post the position and Dustin Cothran from special education aide at Cedar Bluff School to special education paraprofessional at Centre Middle School and Cherokee County High School and gave the superintendent to post the position.

-approved placement of Kristi Bedwell as a reading teacher at Centre Middle School.

-approved the certificated placements of Rush Rutledge as a physical education teacher at Centre Elementary School, Neal Barker as a biology teacher at Cherokee County High School, Dana Austin as a physical education teacher at Spring Garden School, Mark Mitchell as a social science teacher at Cedar Bluff School, Brian Mackey as a physical education teacher/assistant principal at Sand Rock School, Robert Lewis Sims as an assistant principal at Sand Rock School, Brandi Neyman as a kindergarten teacher at Centre Elementary School, DeAnna Patterson as an elementary teacher at Centre Elementary School and Karen Lancaster as an elementary teacher at Centre Elementary School.

In other business, the board:

-approved job postings, including a program specialist position to be funded by Special Education, a math teacher position at Cedar Bluff/Cherokee County High Schools, an instructional aide position at Cedar Bluff School to be funded by Title I and an in-school suspension aide position at Gaylesville School.

-accepted bids on a fence for the Cedar Bluff Football Field from A&G Fence Company, Inc., for $7,900 and on a retaining wall at Cedar Bluff School from McMullen Marine Construction for $22,000.

-approved Vickie McCurdy as an advisory committee member at Spring Garden School.

-tabled action on uniforms for mechanics/bus shop employees as discussed in a previous meeting.

-approved, upon the recommendation of Mitchell Guice, principal of Cherokee County Career and Technology Center, the hiring of hire more student tutors through High Hopes funds.

The next board meeting will be July 22 at 6 p.m. at the Cherokee County Board of Education central office
