Leesburg will soon lay out the proverbial welcome mat for travelers in the western region of Cherokee County.

At its Aug. 4 meeting, the Leesburg Town Council by a 5-1 margin approved a motion to install four ‘Welcome to Leesburg” signs at a cost of $350 each, with locations at U.S. Hwy. 411 West, U.S. Hwy. 411 East, State Hwy. 68 and the Leesburg Landing area.

The council had approved the official town logo at a previous meeting.

In other business, the council accepted a $54, 600 bid from McCartney Construction, Inc., for a Sept. 15-Oct. 15 paving project.

Vulcan Communications, Inc., representative Ben Marcus requested that the town purchase a $295 advertisement for the annual Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce map and brochure. Marcus said that his company would work towards a mid-November publishing date for 25,000 maps. Upon Mackey’s request, Marcus agreed to include an aerial photo of the Town Park.

Before adjournment, the council voted to hire Karaoke performer Jeff Boyer and musical group The Restless Band as entertainment for Sept. 20 Leesburg Day. The council also agreed to allow Town Clerk Jennifer Sharpe to make the final decision on the purchase of Leesburg Day t-shirts.

At the council’s July 14 meeting, outgoing Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Mel Williams spoke with the council about Gov. Riley’s tax plan. Williams invited those with questions about said plans or those needing assistance with property tax calculations to contact the Chamber of Commerce for more information.

In other business, the council heard from WEIS Radio General Manager Jerry Baker, who provided information concerning high speed internet installation for the town hall and police department. The council then tabled the issue until a later meeting.

Mackey read a letter from the City Of Piedmont that addressed the upcoming Appalachian Scenic Byway project and requested that the Town of Leesburg contribute $1,000 towards the cost of designs and maps.

Before adjournment, the council adopted Town Resolution #2003-02
