Construction began July 15, 2003 and county officials hope to have the building completed by July 15, 2004. Those who have driven by the Cherokee County Courthouse recently have probably noticed the progress being made on the new administrative building on property adjacent to the courthouse property.

“They are right on schedule,” said Cherokee County Commission Chairman/Probate Judge Phillip Jordan. “Construction is taking place and I think you will be able to see progress on a daily basis.”

The project began with the removal of four warehouses, which were currently located on the property. This past summer, the county commission, after hearing several bids, awarded the project to C.D. Wilson and Sons, Inc. of Albertville for approximately $3.1 million. The total package from C.D. Wilson included a base bid of $2,715,000; added storage alternate, $335,000; division 17 security items, $78,000 and demolition contract, $65,000 for a total of $3,193,000.

2WR/holmes/wilkins is the architectural firm on this project, which is the same firm that handled the Cherokee County Detention Center project, Jordan said.

The building will house several county offices, Jordan said, noting they have outgrown the courthouse space. The project began with the removal of the four buildings. The next phase is renovation of the courthouse and the next phase, razing of the current courthouse annex building.

Commissioners look forward to the completion of the building one year after construction started, July 14, 2004.

“We expect it to be completed by that date,” Jordan said
