Cherokee’s district elementary and secondary nominees for the Alabama Teacher of the Year are Sue Reynolds from Centre Elementary School in the elementary division and Carol Sanford from Spring Garden School in the secondary division.
“We are fortunate in Cherokee County to have so many educators who are worthy of special recognitions,” said Ann Dykes, teacher of the year and teacher hall of fame coordinator for Cherokee County Schools. “I am sure that many of you recently read the article in the AEA Journal, which revealed that the Cherokee County School District has the highest percentage of advanced degree educators in the state. This is very impressive! However, what may be even more impressive is the HEART that our teachers have for the students they guide and teach each day. Every single teacher who was nominated by his/her school for the JSU and TOY honors express love and respect for their students and an appreciation of the special journey that takes place every day in the classroom, which he/she feels privileged to lead. The positive learning environment generated by this type of leadership is noted not only by ALL students who are able to flourish in this type of setting, but also parents as well as the colleagues of the teachers who have received nominations.”
Other local Teacher Hall of Fame nominees from the individual schools included:
*Anne Anderson Gaylesville School
*Allison Garner Cherokee County High School
*Andrew Jones Sand Rock School
*John McKay Spring Garden School
*Sue Reynolds from Centre Elementary School

According to Mrs. Dykes, each school in the district has the opportunity to nominate one elementary and one secondary nominee for the JSU honor and the TOY honor (according to the grade level of their student population). The JSU and the TOY District selection committee consists of a central office representative, a board member, a community member, and the past year’s JSU and/or TOY elementary and secondary district nominees.
“The selection process is difficult and the teachers’ scores are often very close,” said Mrs. Dykes. “Such was the case this year. Congratulations nominees! We wish you the best as you compete at the next level!
