Jo Ann Payne, fundraising chairperson, Cherokee Humane Society, said organizers were pleased with the turnout for the fundraising event, which drew around 70 people.
“Everybody said they had a good time,” said Mrs. Payne. “Everybody has worked so hard and supported us with our fundraisers this year. We were glad to show that we could also throw a good party!”
On behalf of the Cherokee Humane Society, Mrs. Payne expressed her appreciation to Recording Artist Phil Medley who provided the music for the evening and Edna Jennings and Sageberry Catering who provided the food and beverages.
Freda Waters, president, Cherokee Humane Society Board of Directors, shared a few words about the Humane Society.
“Since the incorporation of the humane society, there have been many perceptions as to what role the humane society will play,” said Mrs. Waters. “The society’s main objective will be to alleviate the pain and suffering of all animals throughout the Cherokee County area. This is going to be accomplished in several different ways, number one, by providing a safe shelter to house literally hundreds of animals that have either been abandoned or lost, mistreated or neglected. To date, the Dekalb County SPCA has rescued 914 animals. We respond to all complaints of cruelty and neglect and the society, to date, has conducted 186 cases of reported cruelty and neglect in the Cherokee County area.
Cherokee Humane Society will continue its spay and neuter assistance program, Waters said.
“To date, we have helped 52 households within the Cherokee County area,” said Waters. “The society will continue to provide education and education materials to the general public about what is going on in areas of animal welfare and responsible pet ownership. The humane society will also be willing to assist the cities, Cherokee County or any municipality in Cherokee County with implementing any animal control programs that they would wish to participate in. Cherokee Humane Society is a very vital organization in the community. I know that our progress may seem somewhat slow, but behind the scenes, we really are hard at work. We purchased 10 acres of property and if weather permits, it is our plan to begin the construction of the foundation. So with your patience and continued support, the Cherokee Humane Society will become a reality. It is just going to take a little bit of time. On behalf of the board of trustees and the fundraising committee, we say thank you and God bless you for help and all your support.”
On behalf of the Humane Society, Mrs. Waters expressed her appreciation to the fundraising committee for making all the arrangements for the dance. The committee is composed of Jo Ann and James Payne, Norman and Carolyn Wills, Nancy Thackston, Ruth Phillips, Joan and Chris Martakis and Ann Law.
“They are special people,” said Waters. “They are responsible for this lovely dinner dance here tonight as well as for all of our other fundraisers that we have throughout the year. They really do a good job. The humane society would not have progressed as far as it has had it not been for the fundraising committee.”
Mrs. Waters also recognized the contribution of the Cherokee Humane Society Board of Directors members and numerous other volunteers.
Board Member Dean Buttram Jr., a local attorney, recognized Congressman Mike Rogers who attended the meeting with his wife, Beth and also shared some good news for the Cherokee Humane Society.
“I’ve known Cong. Rogers for a long time,” said Buttram. “He’s a good guy. We certainly appreciate them spending Valentine’s Day with us and recognizing this great cause. Cherokee County Commission has made a request that Cong. Rogers put some money in the 2005 fiscal year budget in order for the county to put toward the animal shelter. He is going to do what he can. We certainly appreciate all of the public officials who have helped us and thank you very much for coming tonight.”
“I just wanted to let you know that I appreciate this community,” said Rogers. “You have been very good to me and Beth and I want to always let you know how much that means to me. I have been in contact with your local leaders in quite a host of things. We were able to do some pretty neat things this current year for Cherokee County, but I have committed to Dean to do all I can for the Humane Society. I know it is a really important project. It speaks a lot for this community your coming together like this tonight. I want to do my part. We look forward to working with you.
