The Sand Rock Volunteer Fire Department shared some good news at the March 8 Sand Rock Town Council meeting.

According to VFD Chief Billy Lumsden, the department’s Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating has been lowered to a ‘6/9’ rating.

The change is effective June 1, 2004.

Sand Rock residents within 1,000 ft. of a fire hydrant will receive an ISO classification of ‘6,’ which should assist said residents in lowering household insurance premiums.

“Insurance savings should be somewhere in the neighborhood of 35% on homeowner insurance policies,” said Lumsden. “The department is well pleased with this rating, and we’ll continue to improve.

“We’ve also ordered some communication equipment with our FEMA funds, and we’re planning in spending between $47,000 to $49,000 on equipment this year.”

“One of the best parts about this [FEMA] grant is that we can now say that every department member will be fully equipped during a call,” said VFD member John Green.

In other business, the council agreed to meet on March 22 at 6 p.m. for the purpose of drawing up new Town Park rules and regulations.

Mayor Pro Tem Martha Battles reported that new Town Hall locks will be installed, while the council tabled a discussion on a request for a new street light
