Local authorities arrested a Cedar Bluff Elementary School teacher on drug charges following a traffic stop on Alabama 68 this past weekend. The arrest was made Saturday, April 10 around 5:30 p.m. after a quantity of methampehtamine was discovered.

Arrested, according to reports, was Raenette Ramey Hawkins, 37. Jeff Morgan, commander, Cherokee County Drug Task Force, said Hawkins was stopped for not having a tag on her vehicle. The deputy who stopped the vehicle called for assistance from another deputy, who had the drug dog in the vehicle. The dog detected the drug and agents then discovered approximately 1.9 grams of methamphetamine.

Kay Davis, superintendent, Cherokee County Schools, said Hawkins was placed on administrative leave with pay Monday, April 12.

In an unrelated case, agents arrested Edward Lamar, 35, of Gaylesville, owner of Cindy’s Variety on Alabama 68, around 8 p.m., reports said. With Lamar’s cooperation, agents conducted a search and discovered hydrocodone pills and a small amount of marijuana inside the store and also seized more than $10,000.

This arrest was a joint effort by Cherokee County deputies, Cedar Bluff Police, Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board and Alabama Marine Police.

Early Sunday morning, April 11, task force agents arrested two Centre men on County Road 22 after a quantity of meth was allegedly thrown from the truck they were in. A Cherokee County deputy was behind them at the time, reports said.

According to reports, the driver pulled off the side of the road and the deputy pulled in behind the truck.

The man in the passenger side of the truck exited the truck and ran, and the deputy observed him throw something out the window. After calling for assistance from other deputies and task force members, agents took the men into custody.

Arrested, reports said, were Mark Jason Watkins, 28, and Terry Linn Bevels, 34, who were charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

Agents discovered about 1.3 grams of meth that was allegedly thrown out, Morgan said. Agents also discovered precursor chemicals used in the manufacture of meth, but the amount was not enough to warrant a manufacturing charge, Morgan said. Agents called the Alabama Department of Forensic Science in to assist
