An investigation continues following the discovery of a dead inmate in Cherokee County Detention Center early Wednesday morning.

Cherokee County Sheriff Larry Wilson said deputies arrested James Harold Williams Jr., 28, of Piedmont, Tuesday evening, May 4 on charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance and attempting to elude. He was later charged with promoting prison contraband.

Jailors discovered Williams' body in his cell around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. There were no visible marks or indication of the cause of death, Wilson said.

Cherokee County Coroner Don Rogers and ABI agents continue the investigation, Wilson said.

The body has been sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences Lab in Huntsville for autopsy, said Rogers
