The Cherokee County School System will receive four new Alabama Reading Initiative coaches.

During a recent board meeting, Reading Specialist Pam Miller updated the board and reported that Gov. Bob Riley has allocated the funding which will add reading coaches for grades K-3 to Cedar Bluff, Gaylesville, Sand Rock and Spring Garden Schools.

According to Mrs. Miller, however, this action would leave grades 4 through 6 unattended. The board will consider naming Mrs. Miller as supervisor of the new reading coaches so the system can maintain the program for students in grades 4-6.

Kay Davis, superintendent, Cherokee County Schools, said the system implemented the Reading Initiative program in Cherokee County a few years ago and it has since paid off. Students at all Reading Initiative Certified Schools have shown improvement in their reading skills.

Teresa Noell, uniserve director for this district, said news of these new positions is hot off the press and many are not aware.

“The state is trying to put together very quickly a job description and they are going to allow a little wider assessment of the people to be hired,” said Mrs. Noell. “Probably within the next seven to 10 days, they will have that material out to superintendents. You (Cherokee County Schools) are in the very best posture to take advantage of this new funding because you dedicated years back the money, the personnel that it took to get your schools reading initiative trained. And now you are getting four new units through the new legislation.”

Millie Rowley, president, Cherokee County ESPO (Education Support Personnel Organization) reported on the recent ESPO conference in Anniston. Members were updated on school safety policy and procedure and the new tenure law. She also announced that she would be Patsy Richardson will soon begin her duties as the new president of Cherokee County ESPO.

On another matter, Mrs. Davis recommended hiring full-time assistant principals for Cedar Bluff, Centre Middle School and Gaylesville Schools. Board members, however, said they wanted to meet in a work session with each principal to assess the needs of his/her school before approving this recommendation. The board will meet with each principal in approximately 30-minute sessions Monday, June 21, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

In personnel action, the board:
