The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department has made an arrest in connection with the robbery and assault of a Sand Rock man in the early morning hours of Aug. 1. The incident took place at the residence of Marshall Meadows, 94, at the intersection of Cherokee county Road 231 and County Road 36 around 7 a.m.

According to reports, a man forced his way into Meadows’ residence. Meadows had a pistol and the man took the pistol and used it to strike Meadows in the head. Meadows called a neighbor, Murray Tatum, for assistance. When Tatum arrived on the scene, the man held the weapon on Tatum and forced Tatum to surrender his wallet. The man then took Tatum’s truck and left the scene.

This past Wednesday, Aug. 18, Cherokee County Investigators Jimmy Deberry, Bo Jolly, Mark Hicks and Chief Deputy Tim Hays arrested Charles Edward Chavies, 47, of Rainville in connection with the case. He is charged with two counts of robbery in the first degree.

Tatum’s truck was recovered in Etowah County and Etowah County officials have arrested Karen Barnes who had possession of the truck in connection to the case, Wilson said.

The incident remains under investigation, Wilson said
