The Sand Rock Town Council approved several motions at its Feb. 14 meeting.

The council passed respective motions to purchase a new photocopy machine; accept Graphic Design’s layout of a new “Welcome to Sand Rock” street sign; add a streetlight on Cole St. and Sand Rock Ave. and County Line St. and Sand Rock Ave.; adopt the Cherokee County Alabama Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan from FEMA, and allow the withholding of payroll taxes and join the state retirement system.

In other business, the council reported that CDB Engineering had submitted a proposal for the town zoning map. The council agreed to invite company representative Ms. Monday to the March council meeting.

The council heard from Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Thereasa Hulgan, who updated the council on the Chamber’s recent efforts to promote area tourism and business. The council agreed to review Hulgan’s donation request and present the matter at the March council meeting.

Sand Rock Volunteer Fire Dept. Chief Billy Lumsden reported that the department performed between 65 to 70 runs during 2004. Lumsden thanked the council for considering the department in its 2004-05 budget and said that the department planned on renewing a $10,000 loan.

Council member Rickey Mackey announced that the school flashing sign was installed and working.

Council members Saprina Oliver and Judy Beck reported that they planned to remove the Town Park Pavilion lights.

Before adjournment, the council noted that the Sand Rock School FFA chapter had expressed thanks to the town for the organization’s use of the town’s facilities
