It can be done if the city wants to pursue the matter further.

In a previous meeting of the Centre City Council, Councilman Glenn Chandler suggested that the city consider annexing portions of Highway 9 at Blackwell’s Crossroads, around the lake to the Leesburg Bridge and Highway 411.

In a more recent meeting, Chander said he had spoken with Harold Day, a member of the Centre Water Works and Sewer Board, and Roy Alford, manager, Centre Water Works. According to Alford and Day, such a move would involve approximately 550 houses (meters) at a cost of approximately $1,112,000. These funds could be obtained through FHA grants, Chandler said.

Chandler discussed concerns in a previous meeting about the town of Cedar Bluff considering annexation of certain areas of the county into the town limits. Cherokee County Representative to the Alabama Legislature Richard Lindsey, Chandler said, can submit a bill for the legislature’s consideration if at least 65 percent of the residents in this area approve the annexation.

The council will consider annexation proposal.

The council voted to appoint Jake Graves as the city’s representative on the Centre-Cherokee County-Piedmont Regional Airport Authority to fill the unexpired term of Douglas Snead who passed away recently. Snead’s term was to expire in November and the council can re-appoint Graves or make another appointment at that time.

The council voted to reject previous bids on gasoline and to re-bid this item.

The council reminds residents that local Hannah Home sites in the city are for useable donations only and not trash items. Some of the sites have become depositories for old mattresses and furniture items.

The council voted to waive its May 24 council meeting because of the Alabama League of Municipalities Convention in Huntsville
