At its June 6 meeting, the Leesburg Town Council and the American Youth Soccer Organization discussed a contract that would allow the AYSO the use of the Leesburg Ball Park fields for the months of August, September and October.
“We have a need for more fields than we have for this season, and we wanted to see if we could utilize the space [at the Leesburg Ball Park],“ said AYSO Region 622 Referee Administrator Barry Anderson. “Soccer is the fastest-growing youth sport in the country. We and the Centre Parks and Recreation Department have been discussing a five-year plan. We’d eventually like to host an [AYSO] area tournament, which Huntsville does every year. [Youth soccer] tournaments are big money makers, and we’d like to host around four per year. One of the things we’d like to see happen is a Weiss Lake Soccer Tournament Classic. We could also include some softball tournaments. It won’t be hard to accomplish, but we do need some planning.”
Anderson and the council agreed to enter into a contract pending official AYSO approval later this month.
In other business, the council approved a motion to survey a piece of private property in close proximity to the Town Hall. Following the survey, the council will decide whether or not to purchase said property.
The council also voted enter into a contract with Cotton Hairrell that called for Hairell to be paid $75 for bi-monthly mosquito spraying.
The council agreed to purchase a $100 advertisement in the local band Restless’ national promotional brochure.
Volunteer Fire Department member Michael Tillery requested the council’s assistance in acquiring funds for the construction of a water tower within the town limits. Tillery noted that such a project would help keep or lower Leesburg’s ISO rating. Mayor Ed Mackey said that he would speak with local officials about the project
