Cherokee County Corporate Games, held in early June this year, debuted in 1999 as a way to encourage friendly competition between local businesses, has steadily grown since that time.
“We certainly appreciate the support you give the Chamber in all of the different things that we do around the county,” said Thereasa Hulgan, executive director, Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce. “Today we just wanted to take this time and recognize our Corporate Games sponsors and participants. Without our sponsors, we couldn’t have it. It is a great event.”
The Cherokee Electric team were the overall winners of this year’s event. The Sportsmanship Award went to the Wal-Mart team.
Participating teams included Cherokee Electric Cooperative, Baptist Cherokee, Centre Post Office, Cherokee County Courthouse, Cherokee County Nursing Home, New Participants KTH and Wal-Mart, Centre Post Office, Baptist Health Centers and Model Tees.
This year’s Corporate Games sponsors included Cherokee County Herald, WEIS Radio, O’Neal Realty, TDS Telecom, State Farm Insurance, Associates Appraisal and Realty, Regions Bank and Preferred Health Services.

On behalf of the Chamber of Commerce, Mrs. Hulgan extended her appreciation to Kurt Duryea who has worked with the Corporate Games since from the beginning.
“We’re really thankful to have Kurt still working with us and helping to organize it,” said Mrs. Hulgan. “He does a tremendous job.”
“I would like to thank everybody,” said Duryea. “Every year you step up to the plate. You are what makes it special. Thank you very much.”
Hulgan also reported on other Chamber events.
“We had our golf classic the weekend after the Corporate Games and it went very well,” said Mrs. Hulgan. “We were very pleased with our turnout of 20 teams. We’re hoping to make that an annual event. We’ve been doing our Take a Kid Fishing Tournaments. We have scheduled four and had three already. It has grown each time. We had 27 kids this past month to participate in it. We had 27 in May, 10 in April and they fished in all kinds of conditions, cool, windy, hot. They are just sticking in there with us and having a good time!”
Centre Mayor Phil Powell reminded those attending of the Centre Fall Festival scheduled for Oct. 1.
“Barbara and I appreciate all of you that support the Chamber and work with us on the community events we have,” said Mrs. Hulga
