A local man faces several charges after allegedly leaving the scene of an accident Monday, Oct. 17.

Arrested, according to reports, was Stephen Lamar Atkins, who is originally from Rome, but had been living at a residence on Cherokee County Road 83 in Centre. Alabama Marine Police reportedly arrested Atkins after spotting him walking near Cherokee County Roads 22 and 65 in the Piney Community.

Earlier in the day, reports said, Atkins was involved in a collision on Alabama Highway 9. He allegedly fled the scene and authorities spotted the van he was driving on Lindsey Drive in –Northwood Estates. Atkins apparently lost his left rear tire after heading down Cherokee County 69 following the collision.

The chase involved agents from the Centre Police Department, ABC agents, Alabama State Troopers, Alabama Marine Police, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department, Cedar Bluff Police and the Piedmont Police Canine Tracking unit, reports said.

Atkins, according to reports, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance after agents discovered Valium on him and also had other warrants on him. The Centre Police Department also charged him with leaving the scene of an accident.

No one was injured in the accident, reports said.
