During a recent planning meeting, held at the new Cherokee County Extension System offices, 1526 Chesnut Bypass, members approved program for November 2005 through September, 2006.
For the upcoming year, members approved Dorothy Horton, who has been serving as co-chairperson of the health council, at the request of Josephine Jennings, who asked to step down this year. Mrs. Jennings will continue to serve in the capacity of co-chairperson.
“We appreciate Mrs. Jennings for serving as our chairperson,” said Linda Glass, Cherokee County Extension coordinator. “We appreciate her commitment, her dedication to being here with us.”
A county health council, according to information provided by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System office, is a group of local volunteers who organize themselves into a council for the broad purpose of promoting improvement in the health of the citizens of the county.
The County Health Council seeks to achieve its goal of improved health through active participation in local and statewide health planning efforts that will affect the county.
The general idea of the County Health Council is to involve Cherokee County citizens in health planning decisions that ultimately affect the delivery of health care services to the residents of Cherokee County. Since this is a voluntary citizens group, memberships is open to all Cherokee County residents.
Upcoming programs for the following year are as follows:
-November 2005-Community Action Agency, heating/cooling assistance and other services offered.
-December 2005-Christmas Party, annual toy/gift donations to children of local needy families.
-January 2006-Healthy Weight
-February 2006-Wise Health Consumer Month.
-March 2006-Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Week.
-April 2006-Substance Abuse Month.
-May 2006-HIV/AIDS
-June 2006-Fireworks Safety Month
-July 2006-Ice Cream Month
-August 2006-Off
-September 2006-Program Planning meeting
-October 2006-Mental Illness Awareness Week
The council voted to continue providing comfort kits for Cherokee County Chapter of the American Red Cross as its local project.
The next meeting of the Cherokee County Health Council is Thursday, Nov. 17, at noon in the Cherokee Baptist Medical Center Classroom
