We just felt it would give more people an opportunity to participate, particularly those who wish to build floats, who might not otherwise get to participate, said Thereasa Hulgan executive director, Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce. And we also did it for safety concerns. While emergency/rescue squad personnel do a great job with traffic control and other duties, this will make their job much easier than it would be at night.
Preliminary plans, Hulgan said, are to begin the parade lineup at 9 a.m. The parade will begin at the West Main Street Shopping Center and D-C Gas and end at Centre Elementary School.
As in the past, The Spirit of Cherokee, Inc. will sponsor the float contest. Prizes of $200 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place will be given away in three categories, including Schools, Community and Commer-cial.
At least one volunteer has been designated to seek out-of-town judges for the float contest and another has been given the task of contact all Cherokee County Schools about their participation in the parade, Hulgan said.
Entry fee is $50 for commercial floats, $25 for civic clubs and churches, $20 for cars and trucks and there is no charge for School, Boy Scout or Girl Scout entries.
Committee members are confident they will be able to get as many entries, including bands and other attractions, as they have in the past. And lights are still allowed even though the event is being held in the day time this year, Hulgan said.
Weve already spoken with Santa Claus and he is excited we are holding the event on Saturday morning, said Hulgan.
Float entry deadline is Dec. 5. For more information, call the Spirit of Cherokee Voice Mail at (256) 526-1200 or to pick up an application, call or come by the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce office at (256)927-8455.
