They came …

They saw …

Hopefully, they conquered.

A group of elected officials, educators and civic-minded citizens journeyed to Montgomery Thursday on behalf of the proposed Gadsden State Community College/Cherokee County Center.

The purpose of the group of about two dozen was to convinced members of the State Board of Educaction of the benefits of constructing the center.

Board members listened intently during the work session as their members gave presentations, including mostly pros of the project but also limited possibilities of cons.

Probate Judge Kirk Day, State Rep. Richard Lindsey, Cherokee County superintendent of schools Brian Johnson, Cherokee County Nursing Home Administrators Jerry Culberson and GSCC President Dr. Renee Culverhouse all spoke on behalf of the $21.8-million project.

Weighing heavily in favor of obtaining state funding is the unification of all government entities of Cherokee County.

State College System Chancellor Dr. Roy Johnson is solidly behind the project.

Board member Stephanie Bell, representing District 3 which includes Cherokee County, emphasized the needs and pluses, as did District 8 member Dr. Mary Jane Caylor, who at one time represented the district.

The board will meet on Dec. 8 to vote on the funding.
