The Spirit of Cherokee, Inc. Committee is looking forward to the first daytime event in several years.
Weve had a lot of people to respond, said Thereasa Hulgan with the Spirit of Cherokee, Inc. Committee. The Shriners are coming, we have several clubs and businesses that are doing floats, both Girl Scout and Boy Scout groups and Santa is ready with his candy!
WEIS Radio Personality Jerry Baker will serve as emcee for this years parade. The town of Cedar Bluff will head things off as the Grand Marshal.
The parade will start at DC/Gas/West Main Street Shopping Center and will proceed down Main Street, ending at Centre Elementary School.
Prizes will be awarded to float contest participants, including $200 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third places. Divisions include School Floats, Community Floats (Churches and Non-Profit Organizations) and Commercial Floats (All Businesses).
There will be a first, second and third place winner in each division. Judging on all floats will be done prior to the parade. All floats must be in line-up position by 9 a.m. to be judged. All judging will be done on workmanship, originality and overall appearance.
This years float contest judges include Amy Davis of Anniston, Burt Cothran of Gadsden and David Till from Albertville.
One of the local float participants this year is residents and staff of Cherokee Village Assisted Living Center, who are looking forward to this years parade.
We are going to have as our theme Together Waiting For Santa, said Margaret Eubanks, manager, Cherokee Village. We are going to have children on the float and then one or two of our residents. Our float is going to be like a bed and we are going to have the children in it. The residents will be around the bed which is decorated for Christmas.
We love being a part of the parade, said Eubanks. We havent participated in a while. When I was at the nursing home, we participated for several years. We have always had Miss Cherokee County Nursing Home. Here at Cherokee Village, the residents decided we were going to have a float and we were going to get it decorated!
All Cherokee Village residents will have the opportunity to attend the parade, Eubanks said.
We always have a place saved for our residents if they want to go to the parade, said Eubanks. We are also getting ready for Christmas inside. Weve got decorations, trees. Residents have helped put those up too.
The residents and staff of Cherokee Village wish everybody a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! said Eubanks.
