Two Etowah County youths are facing attempted murder charges after they allegedly led Cherokee County law enforcement agents on a high speed chase and fired shots at a Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department vehicle. The incident began around midnight Friday, Feb. 10, on County Road 7.

Arrested, according to reports, were Christopher Franklin, 19, of Hokes Bluff who was the alleged driver in the incident and Edward Pierce, 18, his passenger, who was accused of doing the shooting with a high-powered rifle.

Cherokee County Sheriff Larry Wilson said Deputy Kneely Pack attempted to stop Franklin and Pierce in the Chevy S10 Pickup Truck for suspected hunting. Franklin and Pierce attempted to flee the scene and the passenger in the truck fired several shots at the patrol car, one which hit the windshield on the drivers side, which caused Deputy Pack to leave the roadway and wreck the vehicle.

Pack, who escaped injury, was able to get the tag number off the vehicle and the two were arrested later at a residence on Young’s Chapel Road in Etowah County, reports said.

The apprehension of Franklin and Pierce, reports said, was a joint operation of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department, Cedar Bluff Police Department, Leesburg Police Department, Alabama Marine Police, District Attorney’s office investigator, Piedmont police officers, Hokes Bluff police officers, Etowah County Sheriff’s Department and Centre police officers.

Franklin and Pierce are currently lodged in the Cherokee County Detention Center.

Although the patrol car will have to be replaced, Deputy Pack was fortunate in that he was not injured in the chase and shooting, Wilson said
