The Cherokee County Chapter of the American Red Cross is now making plans for the 10th Annual Souper Supper and Silent Auction.

This year’s event will begin Saturday, March 11, at 5 p.m., at the ROC (First Baptist Church Recreational Outreach Center), 300 Chestnut Bypass, Centre, Ala. All donations should be received at the chapter office 1017 W Main Street Centre, no later than Monday, March 6, so that all items can be catalogued and appropriately publicized.

In addition to the soup supper and auction, organizers and volunteers are planning to have a live auction this year, featuring the works of local artists, including MaLou Smith and Myrtice West among many others.

Tickets are $10 each and may be purchased at the local American Red Cross office, 1017 West Main St., Centre, or from any member of the Red Cross Board of Directors.

“Cherokee County American Red Cross is sponsoring its 10th Souper Supper and Auction,” said Betsy Hollis, chapter manager, in a recent letter to merchants. “In years past, donations from businesses, organizations and attractions such as yours have proven to be highly popular auction items. We are counting on you again to help support this worthwhile endeavor which grows in attendance each year.”

“When you are contacted by one of our volunteer workers, please consider what you might donate,” said Mrs. Hollis. “Naturally, the larger and more significant the items, gift certificate, tickets for events or accommodations or a cash contribution (to defray expenses), the more money it will generate to support the chapter’s services. Donors also are recognized and publicized before the event to spur community interest. All donors are identified during the auction, unless they choose to remain anonymous, and your contribution not only will represent you to the several hundred people attending, but also will be recognized in receipt form at the close of the auction.”

Funds raised at the annual Souper Supper and Auction, Mrs. Hollis stressed, remain in Cherokee County and are used for the benefit of all of the county’s residents. “Your donation might save a life by providing First Aid, CPR/AED training; help with heating assistance for the elderly or disabled; train volunteers to respond to weather-related disasters; teach a lifeguard class, help a family recovering from a residential fire; or provide emergency assistance to families of military personnel. All contributions to the Red Cross are tax deductible.”

For more information, call (256)927-3797.

“Thank you for supporting us in our endeavor to provide life-saving services to the people of Cherokee County,” said Mrs. Hollis. “You generosity will enable us to continue to grow and serve in 2006 and beyond. We wish the same prosperity for you and your business.”
