Cedar Bluff assistant coach Jonathan McWhorter is the new head football coach at the school.
The Cherokee County Board of Education unanimously approved McWhorter for the position Tuesday evening.
McWhorter, who played football at Cedar Bluff and later returned to teach and coach there, said, I definitely feel honored with a tradition like Cedar Bluff and the support of the community and administrative support.
Former coach Steve Smith left Cedar Bluff to take the top coaching job at Piedmont High School.
McWhorter said the Tigers lost 10 good seniors from last years team, but we have a good group of players coming back. We are working hard and expecting to have some success. It is during this time of year I guess is when your football team is made. How hard we work now will determine how good we are.
The staff and faculty at CBS provide a good support system, McWhorter said.
That is a big plus. The people on staff are great to work with and they are good people and good coaches. We all consider ourselves part of the same family.
School Superintendent Brian Johnson said McWhorter, who teaches history, does a good job in the classroom as well as on the field.
I was fortunate enough in my career to have coached Coach McWhorter, Johnson said.
I would just like to congratulate him and wish him the best of luck in the future at Cedar Bluff. I know he will carry on that winning tradition and I just want to let you know we are here to support you in any way, Johnson said
