The property, as explained by Commission Chairman/Probate Judge Kirk Day during a recent meeting, is located adjacent to property the county already owns. The Advocacy Center Board of Directors expressed a desire to sell the property and is working with the city of Centre to acquire the building currently occupied by the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce on Cedar Bluff Road in Centre.
That will give them a little more room to operate in and to do what they need to do to give the children there a more comfortable environment in which to work with, Day said. Given that, they are in need to sell that property. The board has made an offer to the county in the amount of $65,000. Its a good opportunity to expand some property we already have and to help out the Children Advocacy Center.
Upon the recommendation of Cherokee County Engineer Roger Hall, the commission approved acceptance of Cherokee County Road 580 in the Cherokee Landing Subdivision into the Cherokee County Road System. Hall presented to the commission a check for $21,267.50 to do the paving work and also a warranty deed for a 60-foot right of way to be completed once the plat is signed and recorded.
The commission approved a resolution giving Chairman Day permission to sign a resolution of agreement between the commission and the Cedar Bluff Utilities Solid Waste Authority to jointly apply for CDBG grant funds to do sewer work on Alabama Highway 9, as discussed in previous meetings.
The commission also approved an HVAC Chemical Maintenance Contract from Garrett-Callahan Company for $3,600 annually for maintenance of the Cherokee County Administration Building.
During the work session prior to the regular meeting, Revenue Commissioner Johnny Roberts, who is also a member of the E911 Board of Directors, gave an update on the new GIS (Global Information System) mapping system. The commission approved a contract with Integraph for implementation of this new system, which can be used by the sheriffs department, highway department and other county departments as well.
If everything goes well, within a couple of weeks, we will all be mapping on computer, said Roberts. This is monumental in connecting these dots. Weve got a lot of dots connected but we still like just a few more. Weve already received $114,894.12 from the Department of Revenue on our grants.
According to Roberts, a representative from the Alabama Department of Revenue will look over the programs hardware in the near future to make sure everything is functioning properly.
Everything is looking well, said Roberts. Weve had a few glitches. Weve got a lot of things going on. Of course, in two weeks we will have our tax sale. We have the auditor in the office going through the books. That is always a process that continues on.
Development around our cities has already been done, said Roberts. This has been tough for them to get digitized, but everything is going well now and we finally got to that point. Our next process will be hiring our employees. We did two days of training last week and will start again this Friday doing some other training. I think this is going to be something you will all be proud of.
Cherokee County Solid Waste Supervisor Wayne Cochran reported a successful spring cleanup April 24-29 which collected some 231 of garbage/trash which deposited into Three Corners Regional Landfill.
It was a very successful cleanup week, said Cochran. We gave about half of our trash bags away.
