Bobby Joe “Coach” Johnson and Kimball Parker were headed for a runoff for the District 2 spot on the County Commission.
The Parker-Johnson race was close in the primary election, with 1,529 votes for Johnson and 1,578 for Parker.
The winner of that race will face Republican incumbent Mark Green and Independent candidate Tim Abernathy.
In the race for County Commission, District 4, Carlton “Bubba” Teague is up against Carl Hackett, a retired teacher.
Teague, who was among six contenders for the Democratic nomination, came out with a strong lead with 2,459 votes. Hackett was his closest challenger with 1,035 votes.
The winner will face Republican incumbent Kay Chumbler and Independent candidate Larry Woodall.
The runoff period was longer this year to allow military personnel outside the United States and in war zones time to have their votes counted.
Republican and Democratic candidates who were running unopposed in the primary were not on primary ballots. Probate Judge Kirk Day, a Republican, will face Democratic candidate Melvyn Salter and Independent candidate Bobby Borders in the general election in November.
Coroner Don Rogers, who was unopposed in the Democratic Primary, will face Pat Herrera, an Independent candidate in November.
One of the key state races on the Republican ballot puts first-time political candidate Luther Strange up against veteran politician George Wallace Jr. in the lieutenant governor’s race Strange won 48.1 percent of the vote in the June 6 Republican primary and Wallace placed second with 33.4 percent of the vote.
This was the first year, Republicans have held a separate primary election in Cherokee County
