Approximately 1,800 Cherokee Electric Co-op customers were without power Tuesday afternoon following a slow moving storm that swept through the area with strong wind and cloud-to-ground lightning.

According to reports, lightning struck the Centre Substation and blew several fuses around 3:15 p.m. which resulted in an outage of approximately 30 minutes. Co-op crews were able to repair the damage and restore power in short order.

Beverly Daniel, director, Cherokee County Emergency Management Agency said she tracked the storm when it entered the Broomtown area, where it remained for a good while before moving south. Daniel said she received isolated reports of hail, but no reports of serious damage other than the power outage.

The area received more than an inch of rain, according to reports
