Gov. Bob Riley has appointed Thomas Lynn Fitzpatrick Sr. of Gaylesville to the Cherokee County Commission. Fitzpatrick is filling the seat vacated by the resignation of Commissioner Kay Chumbler.

Fitzpatrick, 64, is a beef cattle farmer, and is a former insurance agent. He is the current President of the Cherokee County Cattlemen’s Association and a former member of the Kiwanis Club.

Fitzpatrick said Monday afternoon that he is looking forward to serving on the commission.

"It's a chance to give something back," said Fitzpatrick, who was to be sworn into office Monday evening.

Fitzpatrick is a native of Cherokee County and lives on the farm where he grew up in the Broomtown community. He said he is retired except for his cattle business.

He is the son of the lat Jack Fitzpatrick, who also served on the Cherokee County Commission.

"I have memories of that. It's something I always thought I would like," he said.

Fitzpatrick has three children and three grandchildren and is married to Reita Fitzpatrick.

“Lynn Fitzpatrick’s community involvement over the years, both as a business leader and with civic organizations, shows his dedication to the people of Cherokee County. I have no doubt he will provide strong and honest leadership on the County Commission,” Gov. Riley said.

Fitzpatrick said he did not know yet if he will run for re-election to his seat.

"That's down the road," he said.

If Fitzpatrick does seek Post Four, he will face Carlton "Bubba" Teague, who Cherokee Electric Cooperative employees made a strong showing in the primary and runoff elections.

Chumbler, who resigned for health reasons earlier this month, was on the Republican slate to run
