The Cherokee County Commission, in a recent meeting, approved action to proceed with sewer upgrades in the Spring Garden and Rock Run areas.
The commission awarded the Community Development Block Grant Program Administrative Assistance bid for Project Number CY-CE-PF-06-014 to Morton and Associates, Inc.
Cherokee County Administrator Tim Burgess said this was the only bid received for administrative services. At this point, the county has not chosen an engineer for the project.
The commission also voted to enter into a Required Agreement of Understanding for Joint CDBG/Rural Development Projects between the Cherokee County Water and Sewer Authority and the Cherokee County Commission for the purpose of clarifying responsibilities concerning the Cherokee County Commission 2006 CDBG Project CY-CE-PF-06-014 and permission for the chairman and administrator to sign.
This project will include replacing the current sewer system in the Spring Garden and Rock Run areas. The project will include installation of large pipes since the current pipes are not big enough to enable the system to work the way it should.
On anoer matter, the commission agreed not to purchase a tract of land offered to the county by the estate of the Late Commissioner Earl Westbrook. The land is located next to Jordan Funeral Home.
Coissioner Lori Owens made the motion to decline the offer, which was made in a previous meeting.
"At the time he (Commissioner Westbrook) set
up his will, this (administration) building had not been built, explained Commission Chairman/Probate Judge Kirk Day. Nor was there any certainty of where they were going to build the administrative center. However, since we built this building, theres really not much of a need for a piece of property. In his will he made the county the first offer to buy the land to be used for county offices and that type of thing.
Day reminded commissioners and others present about a Little River Canyon National Preserve hearing scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 5, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., at the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce office.
