A local veteran blood donor officially started his 23rd gallon of blood this past Tuesday, May 22. James Burkhart, a Leesburg resident, has donated a record-setting 22 gallons of blood over the past few years.

During a special drive in Burkhart’s honor, Burkhart started on gallon number 23. The drive was held at the ROC. The driver drew 22 prospective donors and collected 18 productive pints, according to reports.

Burkhart said he gives blood every 56 days and encourages others to do the same.

Betsy Hollis, chapter manager, Cherokee County Chapter of the American Red Cross, said Burkhart is much more than a blood donor to Red Cross. He does everything from working closely with RC disaster teams to changing light bulbs and taking out the trash, Mrs. Hollis said.

Cherokee County Chapter American Red Cross will honor James Burkhart, its most prolific blood donor, with a blood drive Tuesday, May 22, 2007 at the ROC.

Hollis, Burkhart and other Red Cross personnel encourage donors to join them in saving lives by donating whenever they can. Prospective donors must be at least 17 years of age, in general good health, weigh at least 110 lbs, and be able to present a picture ID or prior donor card
