The city of Centre plans to recognize local schools as part of Fall Festival 2007. This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 6.

In the past, Festival organizers have honored various groups, including military veterans and others and this year decided to focus on schools within the city limits by sponsoring a School/Government Day. During the day, students from Centre Elementary School, Centre Middle School, Cherokee County High School and Cherokee County Career and Technology Center will preside in various municipal offices including mayor, city council, fire department, police department and others.

Centre Elementary School students Tyler Lewis, Baylee Morris, Kristen Moon, Allie Rogers, Edward Frier, and Austin Smith (chief) will serve as firefighters throughout the day.

Centre Middle School Students Austin Hartline (chief), Richard Barton, Tanner Young, Kylie Graham, Eric Burgess and Heather Hubbard will serve as police officers throughout the day.

Cherokee County High School Students will serve as mayor and city council representatives. Virginia Ann Jordan will serve as mayor. Paul Sewell, Jake Smith, Jessie Kisor, Angel Carter, Amanda Rogers, Emily Brandt and Kristin Clevenger will serve as city council members. Other CCHS students participating include Will Bailey as city attorney, Jesse Jordan as city judge and Seth Wilson as city clerk.

Cherokee County Career and Technology Center students will occupy the positions of street supervisor, sanitation supervisor, and parks and recreation supervisor. CCCTC representatives include Kendra Lowe, Kayla McGatha and April Moon.

“These students are our leaders of tomorrow,” said Centre City Clerk Mary Lee Tucker. “This is a good chance for them to learn a little bit about local government.”

According to Tucker, these students will also participate with their schools on the float competition Fall Festival Day and a special luncheon is planned in their honor for October.

And other plans are shaping up for Fall Fest 2007 as well. The Gospel Group Renewed will sing from 8:30 a.m. until 9:15 a.m. in Regions Parking Lot.

The Annual Kids Fun Run for Kids begins at 9 a.m. The run will include groups in the ages 2-3 years, 4-5 years, 6-7 years, 8-9 years, 10-11 years and 12-13 years age divisions.

The Parade begins at 10 a.m. with local schools leading the way with their various floats and exhibits. A prize will be awarded to the best-decorated float.

Duos and Solos square dancers will perform from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tom and Shirley Holder will offer dance line instruction beginning at 11 a.m. At 1 p.m., Vocalist Robin Wooten and the Southern Flyers will present a concert.

These performances will also be held in the Regions Parking Lot
