Cherokee County will begin its holiday celebrations Saturday with the Christmas Parade in Centre and the arrival of one of our favorite fellows — Santa Claus.

Gaylesville parade participants will lead the way down Main Street as grand marshals of the annual event, which will start at 10 a.m. at DeKalb-Cherokee Gas and end at Centre Elementary School.

“We’ve had a lot of good response this year,” said Thereasa Hulgan, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce. “We have churches, civic groups, three Shriners groups, and Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.”

Participants also include several Cherokee County businesses, antique cars, antique tractors, area rescue squads and fire departments.

Parade leading honors are alternated among the county’s municipalities.

Floats will be judged prior to the parade and all floats must be in lineup position by 9 a.m. for judging.

The Spirit of Cherokee organization is the official sponsor of the parade and the Chamber of Commerce is providing information to parade entrants.

For safety reasons, no candy or other objects will be thrown from floats, but sources say Santa will be tossing candy along the way because the rules don’t apply to Santa!

A men’s choir and other entertainers will perform at the review stand, which will block off South River Street at Main Street.

Jerry Baker of WEIS Radio in Centre will be emcee for the parade.

The weather forecast for parade day calls for mostly cloudy skies with a high of 66 degrees and a 20 percent chance of rain.

Hulgan said it should be a great day for the parade.

"The chill in the air just adds that something extra," she said
