Special Agent in Charge Carmen S. Adams said Friday that the man was Raymond Jenkins, 36, of Chattanooga, Tenn.
A U.S. Park Service Ranger discovered Jenkins' body on Dec. 6 near a campfire.
The FBI said Jenkins died of a single gunshot wound. "The autopsy revealed that the cause of death was a single gun shot to the roof of the mouth," according to a news release from FBI spokesman Paul E. Daymond in Birmingham.
The Cherokee County Sheriffs Department and the Alabama Bureau of Investigation personnel assisted in the initial investigation at the canyon. Officers found a .25 caliber pistol lying underneath the victim along with one fired .25 caliber casing.
Adams thanked the Park Service, Cherokee County Sheriff's Department and other law officers who assisted in the case
